Toast to Dad with these two great wines this Father's Day.
For Mark Mazzoni (Zialena Winemaker and Fourth Generation Owner), his Father’s Day usually starts an hour before he wakes up, with his two boys Axl (5) and Dane (3) bounding into his bedroom to greet him with all the bright-eyed optimism of youth. Once coffee is poured, Mark and his wife Maura begin a day filled with family fun, exploring local parks to bask in Sonoma County’s glorious outdoors.
Around dinner time, Mark usually opens two bottles at once – the 2017 Zinfandel gets poured first and is a perfect accompaniment to meal prep, which Mark does outside on the patio. The abundant fruit and complex aroma profile will dial up anyone’s appetite (we suggest noshing on some aged cheddar while you sip on this one!) Meanwhile, let your 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon open up a bit on the counter in a decanter while you wait patiently for the grilled meats to be prepared! Once dinner is ready, the Cabernet is poured, and the wine will have opened up to reveal clove and currant. Save a little for after the kiddos are in bed, as the evolution of the wine and how oxygen changes the perception of the myriad flavors in this fine wine is really exquisite.
